TIME Magazine Next Generation Leader Magid Magid confirmed as MOVE Congress 2021 speaker

When TIME magazine announced its 2019 TIME100 Next list of “100 emerging leaders who are shaping the future”, it featured 29-year-old Magid Magid, the youngest ever Lord Mayor of Sheffield who had fled to the UK from Somalia as a child. We can’t wait to meet Magid Magid at the MOVE Congress 2021 in Brussels, Belgium, where we’re excited to announce that he’ll be one of our keynote speakers on 18 November.

Having worked as an MEP for the Greens Party and served on the committee that responded to the migration crisis, Magid is no stranger to Brussels or the current political challenges facing our sector when it comes to being heard, recovering from the pandemic and creating a space for inclusion. He is now the Founder and Director of the Union of Justice, an NGO advocating racial and climate justice, and author of the Art of Disruption: A Manifesto for Real Change (he once “banned” Donald Trump from Sheffield!) and is the is co-chair of refugee charity City of Sanctuary Sheffield.

Magid is the first of our confirmed keynote speakers for an action-packed first full day of the MOVE Congress 2021, and many more speakers are set to be confirmed as the Congress programme shapes up in the coming weeks.

More highlights on 18 November: Parallel workshops

Reconnect: Integration of Refugees Through Sport
One of the world’s most powerful voices for women’s rights in sport and Afghan women’s safety and rights, Khalida Popal will join forces with Save the Children expert and member of EU Commission’s Expert Group on migration, asylum and integration, Adnan Abdul Ghani, to lead an empowering Integration of Refugees Through Sport workshop, putting refugees’ perspectives first.

Rebuild: Active urban spaces through creative design and placemaking
Anna Bradley from Placemaking Europe, Vlad Federov from BG Be Active and Rozina Spinnoy from the Belgium Design Council will lead a creative workshop and debate that grasps the opportunity presented by the pandemic to design more active outdoors spaces that encourage physical activity.

Restart: Towards a European Sport Diplomacy beyond 2021
And the Towards a European Sport Diplomacy project will host a workshop where participants can flex their political muscles with international diplomats, high-profile political decision-makers and thought-leaders, moderated by Albrecht Sonntag from the EU-Asia Institute and featuring a great line-up of speakers including J. Simon Rofe from the UK Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy.
