Welcome message from the Mayor of Rome
BY IGNAZIO R. MARINO, MAYOR OF ROME
Rome is proud to host the 2014 edition of the MOVE Congress.
Organised by the International Sport and Culture Association and UISP (Italian Sport for All Association), this unique initiative will gather organisations and individuals from around the world, who have a shared interest in sport for all, in the Italian capital. The practice of sport and physical activity is as ancient as the city of Rome itself, as civilisations have progressed using movement both for recreation and survival. Rome is now one of the biggest modern cities in the world, and it faces as many challenges as other big cities in combating sedentary lifestyle and making sure its citizens have suitable opportunities to be physically active.
Sport and movement is a prerequisite for a better quality of life, as it is a means through which we can achieve balance and well-being.
For this reason, as the Mayor of Rome, I would like to welcome all participants to MOVE Congress and hope the event will enrich their valuable contribution to an issue that is particularly close to my heart and that is becoming increasingly topical.
The MOVE Congress is a broad-reaching initiative that enjoys significant contributions from international speakers representing institutions, university research, design, urban planning, business and the third sector.
Sport is a powerful tool for integration, a fundamental driving force for our economy and a great opportunity for cultural and social promotion.
That’s why we want to achieve ambitious goals for our city to improve, with help from government action and new policies for sport, the quality of life and the mental and physical health of all citizens, regardless of their social background, age and gender.
I am convinced that this event will be noticed throughout our city, from the centre to the suburbs, reinforcing the excellent work carried out every day with passion, dedication and professionalism by UISP.
As the MOVE Congress coincides with the occasion of the Italian Presidency of the European Union, we hope that speakers and delegates will make their voices heard – from the historic squares of Rome, to the surrounding stakeholders in sport for all and beyond – in favour of promoting sport and physical activity as a truly democratic discipline.
I extend my most sincere wishes to all participants for a MOVE Congress full of inspiration and for a pleasant and unforgettable stay in Rome.
