Reconnect: Collaborate by networking and including refugees

MOVE Congress Workshop

Thursday 18 November 2021
Part 1: 11:30-13:00 (Room: Ticket Window Hall)
Part 2: 14:15-16:30 (Room: Ticket Window Hall & Dining Room)
Coordinator from ISCA: Monika Resetar
Host: Caroline Jessop
Moderators: Adnan Abdul Ghani and Khalida Popal
Workshop Facilitators: 6 refugee leaders working in sport and physical activity

Making sure everyone is included in community activities is essential as countries and cities reopen, and in this workshop we will focus on inclusion from the perspectives of refugees and migrants. Too often activities for refugees and migrants are created and delivered – with the best intentions – FOR rather than WITH the target group. That’s why this workshop will be led almost entirely by former refugees.

In this unique conference session, eight former refugees will facilitate discussions among and help strengthen the development of the EU-supported Integration of Refugees Through Sport (IRTS) Networking Platform.

The interactive workshop, moderated by high profile sports managers Adnan Abdul Ghani and Khalida Popal, will guide the participants in reconnecting with each other and this target group, including examples of refugee empowerment and leadership in sport and physical activity. We will focus on what the participants in the room learned before and during the pandemic and how to move forward together and with refugees.

Six leaders in sport and physical activity, who were formerly refugees, will lead five groups through “How-to” case scenarios:

  • Inclusion and Integration (led by Feras Karkoutli, IRTS Mentee, Sweden)
  • Overcoming Challenges such as Discrimination (led by Maymi Asgari, Freestyle Footballer and TikTok star, Denmark)
  • Refugees as Leaders (led by Sara Akbulut, SC Victoria Hamburg, and Shabnam Ruhin, German-Afghan Football Player, Germany)
  • Stakeholders and Impact (led by Gerald Mballe, Special Olympics Ambassador, Italy)
  • Participation in Policy Making (led by Rasha Almayri, Football Club Refugee Coordinator, Sweden)

Part 1: 11.30 – 13.00
Strengthening the IRTS Network #WithRefugees icebreakers

Theoretical and practical notes from the migrant’s perspective, with insights from Adnan and Khalida’s experiences in coordination, activism, creating refugee empowerment movements and influencing policy at a national and international level.

Why are empowerment and leadership essential when we talk about inclusion of refugees and migrants? Open Q&A session with workshop participants.

Lunch: 13.00 – 14.15

Part 2: 14.15 – 16.30 (including coffee and networking break)
Case scenario groups led by refugees.
Six refugee leaders will start the discussion by presenting something they are experiencing and give a realistic overview of the challenge.

In small groups we will discuss how the participants, representing various organisations and clubs and being in variety of roles (coach, project manager, leader, etc.), can tackle these challenges, how the situation can be improved, and what can we do together. At the end the groups will decide on the top 3 ways to overcome these challenges and present them to the whole group.
